I have always found myself to be welcomed in countries
and cultures far from my own. Born in
1961 and schooled in civil engineering, I started to explore
photography with a SLR in 1980 and got hooked......
After a year as a UN peacekeeper in Southern Lebanon I
honed my skills at ICP in New York City where "concerned photography"
was a corner stone. Tutored by Gilles Peres,
Inge Morath, Mary-Ellen Mark, Chris Morris to name but a few to which
the added inspiration of James Nachtwey, the Turnley brothers and many
more left a lasting impression and a desire to continue pursuing
the many untold stories. I found myself in Baghdad in the early-mid
90ies documenting the dismantling of Iraq's WMD programs under the auspices of
UNSCOM. The streets of Baghdad where food, fragrance and
ferments mixed lead to my own "A day in the life of..."
project which lasted for five years. I returned to Europe in 1997 and is
since based in The Netherlands. Us humans and the lives we live continue
to fascinate me and the challenge to record and convey the pulse of our
time remain the reason for me to release the
shutter. Time, Newsweek, New
York Times, NY Daily News News, Stern, CNN, BBC, Jane’s Defense
weekly, Volkskrant, HP/De Tijd, Vrij Nederland, Vi, ETC have liked my pictures I hope you will too.
